A young girl silently climbed up some of the boulders that overlooked the ocean. With a smile on her face she pulled herself up to the top and looked down. It wasn't too far down to the salty sea, about ten feet. However the girl was very proud of herself for such an accomplishment. "Ohhh that looks pretty," she said picking up a shell and examining it. She blinked a few times poking it and watching the natural colors shine in the dull light of the evening.
She placed it down and climbed closer to the water looking at a crab making its way around the boulders. She laughed a little and just watched it as it went and hid between two rocks. 'That looks neat,' she thought to herself as she began to climb up a little. She gazed down and looked at the water that splashed against the rocks. 'It looks so strong. I bet it could knock me off the rocks.' The very thought frightened her causing her to climb a little faster.
As soon as she got to the top rock she looked back down at the ocean once more. "I wonder what else is out there," she said. She knew that there were other people beyond the shores because a few came to visit her home. Just knowing that made her feel lonely for someone. She knew the natives didn't like the people that came so much but perhaps they reacted a little strongly? She was still curious about these people who came. She wasn't sure if they were nice or if they were mean and why they wanted to visit her home.
Curiosity killed the cat. She heard that saying before and found it a little strange. But this didn't stop her from wanting to know more about those strange people. The little unexplored country climbed down back to the sand enjoying the soft touch of the beach against her bare feet that hurt from the sharp rocks. Kura sat down wondering if she should go back home before it got too late. "I'm going to stay out just a little longer," she thought out loud. "Just in case someone comes to visit!"

Roderich Edelstein wrinkled up his nose in distaste. It was not that he did not like being away from his home in a nice environment, no. Just… the environment was a little bit too rough for him. Surely he would become accustomed to the sand that would slip beneath his feet and the rocks that would pierce against his pale skin when he (gracefully!) fell forward. Oh, yes. This place would definitely take some getting used to.
However, it was nicer here than back home. For a while, he could escape the series of war plaguing his Empire. Ah, yes. War. How pleasant. Roderich had to suck back the sigh that threatened to escape from his thin lips. Maria Theresa suggested he take a break from strategy and stress. He was reluctant at first, seeing as the duchess could only do so much in his absence. Alas, he decided it was best he did step back from his place as puppet master. For a while, at least.
So, there he was on the sandy beach. Being a country in Central Europe, there had been little to no chance to see such a sight. He could not help but let a small smile grace his lips. It was an extremely rare occurrence that Roderich Edelstein smiled at all. He would probably never show anyone, with one.. Okay maybe two or three exceptions; one being Elizaveta (Elizabeth).
Violet eyes scanned the horizon. Were the Austrians here the only humans in this place? There were not any ships approaching or leaving and there’s had been anchored quite a few miles back…
He paused, glancing behind him back at his footsteps in the sand. How far had he walked? The Austrian cursed at himself. How foolish had he been to simply walk off? What if there were others on this island? And what if they were carnivorous, blood-thirsty –
The man’s thoughts were stopped dead, leaving his mind blank for a number of moments. He stared in surprise; around the curve of the beach there was a small girl. She could not be older than five or six years old. She had just sat there innocently and seemingly appeared out of the thin air. Roderich was practically speechless. Here he had been, thinking about the natives on the island and a human - of all things imaginable – appeared before him.
He took an incredibly cautious step forward, as to not startle the girl. His ‘brow furrowed slightly. He did not know the language that the young girl spoke… He cleared his throat after hesitating a moment or so, “Hello..” His best bet had been English. At this point, Roderich used the English he learned as a default.

When New Zealand saw the man's face she lightly smiled. She wasn't sure if she should jump out anymore though. Perhaps he was lost? She kind of wanted to go say hi to him. She was also scared that the maori people would see him. She remembered that the last time someone strange came here they really did something horrible. The girl frowned a little at the very thought they would hurt this man. Her lower lip slightly quivered at the thought of them hurting him. The thought was upsetting, but imagine actually watching them do something like that. Those poor guys, sure New Zealand didn't like them and she didn't know them but they didn't have to go eat them.
She watched him with big curious eyes but glanced back into the shadows wondering who was watching. She then looked back at him and smiled lightly. "Hi," she said with a short smile. She then frowned and stared at him and begin laughing. "Are you okay?" She asked taking a few confident strides forward towards him. "Ohhh did you come to see me?" she asked with a big grin plastered on her face as if she hadn't seen someone for a while.
She quickly filled the gap between them and sat down right by his feet. Her mind raced a million miles per hour. There were so many questions yet she wasn't sure what to ask him first! She wanted to know what it was like beyond these shores. Then she wanted to know who this guy was and if he were lost or tried to find New Zealand. The thought that someone was looking for her made her in a way happy. She got quite lonely here. She opened her mouth but then closed it and just stared at him, his clothes, and the features on his face. "Who are you? Where are you from? Are you lost? Did you come to see me? If your not looking for me did you come to find someone else? Because those other guys with the funny accents left. I was kind of sad that they left but I don't blame them." She puased for a moment wondering if she should ask more questions or if she should wait to let the man actually answer them.
The islander took a short breath before she stood up throwing her arms in the air and shouting out just to surprise him. "I forgot to do that. Well I didn't but I wanted to see if you were nice or not." She said with a smile. "Because some people are mean and don't like surprises."

He blinked several times at the small child. At first, she did not seem to speak. Could she understand him? Oh no, what if she could not? His mind frantically searched for some other language that she might have understood. However, his rapid mind-pace halted at the movement in front of him. Although it was only a slight movement, it definitely caught his attention. Roderich watched the girl carefully as she looked back towards the center of the island. Out of sheer curiosity (and none of that was fear, mind you!), the Empire chanced a glance that way as well. Even with his eyesight, he dud not see any reason to be alarmed at anything in the shadows. Then again, he never lived here.
Jumping as he heard the girl speak, he composed himself with a set jaw. The Austrian tipped his head forward in a slight greeting bow. He was shocked when the girl hurried over. Before she seemed unsure and wary; if it was of himself or another, he was not sure.
“Yes, I’m fine.” He answered the girl, for a moment confused that she would ask that. He did not look like he was having trouble was he? Perhaps he did look slightly lost; he did wander far off from where the ship was anchored.
Roderich blinked a couple of times as her question repeated in his mind a couple of times. His lips twitched a bit in a hint of a smile. In a way… “I did.” He did go through the trouble of sailing across oceans to get to these islands. So, in a way, the brunette did come to visit the girl.
He watched as she approached him, ‘brows lifting up in surprise. He remained standing for a moment or so before lowering himself onto the sand. As soon as he got comfortable, it seemed he was bombarded with questions from the girl. The brunette frowned slightly, speechless for the moment, “Uhm..” The Austrian’s ‘brows furrowed as he thought, trying to remember the order of the questions. Before he was able to get words out, he released a rather undignified, high-pitched gasp of surprise from the shout. He managed to stammer uncertainly, “I see..”
Roderich took a minute to reorganize his thoughts and breath. His mask was set, and he recited his answer; “My name is Roderich Edelstein. I’m from Austria in the Habsburg Empire – located in Central Europe. At the moment, just a little. And---” The man cut himself off, violet eyes wide. “Men with funny accents? Where were they from? And… Why do you not blame them?” The Austrian’s ‘brows rose up with confusion. Was something ‘bad’ on this island?

New Zealand smiled a little at him. He seemed like a nice guy. "Good~" she said happily. "I'm fine too now~ I get lonely so its good that your here too," she said with a smile. She hoped that this man wouldn't leave as soon as the last ones did. Perhaps the natives wouldn't see him. She really hoped that they wouldn't or maybe they would be nice to him?
A big smile swept across the child's face when he said that he did. Someone was really out there and coming to visit her? That made her so happy. She clapped her hands squeaking with excitment. 'Yay~ I get so lonley! And maybe the natives wont see him. I'm sure they'll be nice to him.'
"ohhhhh Europe? I don't know where that is. I bet it's pretty huh?" She listened with a polite smile on her face to everything he was telling her. "I bet it's pretty there! My home is pretty too. But I've seen my home." She told him.
He seemed like a nice person. She should tell him her own name as well, right? "The natives call me Kura~" She said happily. "I think your name sounds cooler though!" She waited a second and watched him ask her the questions. She was kind of scared to tell him anything because what if he left? He just got here and if he left she'd be alone again. 'Besides, if he leaves because the natives ate those other guys he'd tell other people not to come! Then nobody will want to come see me.' She frowned a little in worry that her thoughts would become reality. Her lower lip quwivered slightly as she just stared at him. "Don't leave, kay?" She told him. "I don't want you to leave yet because you just g ot here!"
She didn't wait for him to answer though. The islander assumed that he deserved to know what happened since he came all this way to see her. If he got hurt and lived he wouldn't want to see her again. So it was best just to be honest. "They said the Netherlands...and they claimed this place and called me New Zealand. But then the natives didn't like that and ate four of them. So they left..." she frowned a little and just sat there waiting for his responce. She knew she shouldn't overreact and jump at him begging him not to leave...not yet.

Being an Empire surrounded by other nations, Roderich really had no true way of knowing how lonely the girl felt. True, there were times where he felt a bit lonely as well; but they were nothing compared to being alone on an island with no way to get to the outside world. And even when he did have those feelings, he always had the company of his staff (as little as he talked to them, they still were there for polite conversations) and his allies.
As long as the girl was happy at the moment, though, he let himself feel at ease that he could help the girl not have those ill feelings, even if he could not be there with her for that long. Maria ordered him away from the frontlines and he went as he pleased. He did not like leaving the duchess on her own with the battles, but he could not just ignore her request. The Austrian planned on merely arriving somewhere, gathering supplies for the trip back and then leaving again. But…
Now he could not just leave on the girl. Not yet. He would stay with her for a short while longer before going back to battle. He did need a break from it after a while, didn’t he? He sighed to himself at the thought.
The man nodded, “Yes... Europe is a very pretty place.” As much as he wanted to give her that fake, reassuring smile that yes, his homeland was indeed very beautiful, he could not. Wars tore the land and nations apart. And he could not tell a small child yet. Even if he did, would she understand it?
Roderich took a moment to look around at the beach scene. He would have loved to be here every day for a very long time. “I think your home’s very pretty, too.” The corners of his mouth twitched – almost a smile.
The brunette inclined his head slightly upon hearing the girl’s name. “It’s nice to meet you, Kura--” He paused, though, blinking several times at her from over his thin-rimmed glasses. His ‘brow furrowed just slightly in confusion, trying to think up of something to say. Should he thank the girl? No one had ever said his name was… ‘Cool’ before. It threw him for a loop, really. “Uhm.. Thank you..” He tried not to sound too confused or anything. It seemed this place was just full of new experiences for him. Was that a good thing?
Frowning at her saddened expression, he nodded once. “No, I will not leave just yet.” Hopefully, that reassured the girl. He did not want to leave so soon, either. He would not think on going back on his word for that. She was such an innocent little girl; he did not want to break her heart by leaving her so soon.
“Netherlands..” He echoed after the girl, his frown increasing slightly. So they were the first to ever come to this island?—Wait, what? Roderich was left blinking repeatedly after what the girl had said. They… the natives.. “Ate four of them?” He finished his thought in disbelief. Why? They just named the island, did they not? The natives got so upset over that, so they killed and ate them? How many people have they eaten since then? … And why had the Duchess not informed him of this before sending him off to wherever the winds took him?
He tried to calm his rampant questions with a few deep breaths. Despite his sudden fright, he had to keep his promise and keep her company. For at least a while longer. He sent nervous glances over to the shadows behind himself and the girl. “…Were the people of the Netherlands the last ones to visit you?” How long had it been since then, anyway? The question suddenly bugged him more than some of the others.
